assisted living in Connecticut

As people age, their nutritional needs vary. A 2-year-old does not need the same things as a 20-year-old, and a 20-year-old does not need the same things as an 80-year-old. It is important to understand that the elderly have very specific nutritional needs.

It is important that these needs be met in order for them to continue to stay in good health. This is why there are special dietary supplements available for the elderly, as well as people in a variety of other age groups.

However, dietary supplements alone are not enough to maintain good health; you must also eat the right foods. It may be hard for older people to prepare these foods as they age. They may need someone else to prepare the food for them. Going out to eat all the time is not a good solution, as many restaurants or take-out foods are unhealthy. A great way to ensure that elderly people are eating the foods they need is to enroll them in assisted living services.

The Two Types of Assisted Living Services

There are two types of assisted living in Connecticut. One type is an at-home assisted living service, in which an aid lives with or visits an elderly person, helping them complete daily tasks and ensuring they get the proper nutrition right in their own home.

The other type of assisted living service is a retirement living program, where the elderly go to live in an assisted living facility. In the assisted living facility, they are able to go about life as usual in their own designated apartment, only getting help when they need it. They can choose to prepare their own meals or eat a nutritionally balanced meal from the complex's dining center. Both of these types of services ensure that elderly people are getting the nutrition they need.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nutrition is important to maintaining an elderly person's health.
  • Many elderly people are not getting the right nutrition.
  • Assisted living services can help the elderly meet their nutritional needs.
  • There are two types of assisted living services - at home services and retirement living complexes. Both of these types of services will ensure that an elderly person is eating nutritionally balanced meals.

About Elizabeth Bemis

In 1998, I drove past an assisted living community construction site, learned that it was part of United Methodist Homes and realized the next stop on my professional journey was to work for a mission driven organization. Soon after, I joined the team as Executive Director of our Middlewoods of Farmington community and later served as Regional Manager for the Middlewoods properties before accepting my current role as Vice President of Marketing, Promotions, and Assisted Living Operations. I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, reading, walking, and love working alongside our staff, residents, and families to build strong communities that reflect the mission, vision, and values of United Methodist Homes.
