United Methodist Homes (UMH) is an award-winning, not-for-profit organization proud to serve the seniors in the Connecticut area. With a long and robust history dating back to 1874, we’re experts in caring for a continuum of needs, including independent seniors, seniors who need assistance, individuals rehabilitating from illness or surgery, younger adults with disabilities, and those living with dementia.
Throughout the history, we’ve worked to provide care focused on body, mind, and spirit. For more than 140 years, United Methodist Homes (UMH) has been dedicated to providing elderly care with compassion and respect. Since our founding in 1874, we’ve had a single mission: provide services supporting health, independence, and dignity. Our staff has carried that tradition into their care for residents today.
At UMH, we believe that a consistent staff is essential for providing thorough medical care and establishing strong relationships. We want your loved ones to be surrounded by faces they know and trust. We are proud of our staff longevity and to celebrate milestones of twenty, thirty and even forty years of service to UMH!
"I am proud to have been on the medical staff at Bishop Wicke from 1999 to 2007, when time constraints made practicing at the nursing home no longer feasible for me. Despite not presently being at Bishop Wicke on a regular basis, I still maintain strong relationships with the many excellent nurses, administrators and staff at the facility and do not hesitate to recommend Bishop Wicke as my preferred choice when referring patients and families for both short term rehabilitation and long term care. The continuity and retention rate of the care team there and their dedication to doing the right thing in the right way for patients is most impressive. I consider Bishop Wicke to be the premier facility of its type in both the Greater Bridgeport and Naugatuck Valley areas. I would not hesitate to refer a family member in need to this facility."

We want every resident to not only feel comfortable in our senior living communities, but also to feel at home. To give residents the comforts of home, we provide a number of different apartment styles, designed to fit any need. Residents are encouraged to furnish these apartments with their own furniture, wall hangings, and cherished belongings from home. And, we love to see pictures of residents’ families!
Providing comfort to our residents is another reason we strive to have a consistent staff. With an attentive staff and a community of friends, residents feel comfortable from the moment they move into one of our senior living communities. Residents are provided a number of services, including daily meals, laundry, housekeeping, maintenance, 24-hour security, scheduled transportation, and more. We work hard to demonstrate to everyone that they are a valued member of our community.
“This is my home. There’s no place in the world I’d rather be, because at my age, I’m alone. But here, I’m part of a large family.”
— Bob Shields, Resident - 10 years
Regardless of what stage of independence your loved one is in, UMH senior living communities offer care to fit their needs. Our staff members are trained in a range of medical care levels, including assisted and independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term rehab and hospice care.
High-level care is our top priority. Each resident has a written care plan, developed with input from our exceptional nurses, the resident, their family, and their primary care physician. To ensure these plans are always outlining the best care for residents, we conduct regular meetings to reassess the plan and update it as needed. Transportation is also provided for medical appointments.

One thing you’ll notice when you visit our senior living communities is that they are lively places! Each UMH community provides residents with numerous activities to keep them busy and engaged. A few of the activities include:
Our residents also regularly venture outside the community for activities, too. From museum visits to shopping trips, there’s never a dull moment for our seniors!
Spiritual activities are another way our seniors stay connected with each other and the surrounding community. Prayer services, Rosary groups, communion services, Bible studies and meditation groups are among the activities we provide in our senior living communities. We also offer transportation to weekly religious services. And, while every resident is welcome to attend, no resident is ever pressured to engage in any activity.
